I highly recommend everyone sees this movie. It was a terrific portrayal of the founding members of the iconic rap group N.W.A. and the birth of their careers. It does not glorify gang violence in the slightest but rather shows the successful exodus of artists choosing a legitimate, and productive lifestyle over the hustler life, which many of their contemporaries chose to pursue.
I have seen a lot of articles bashing the movie, claiming that music like N.W.A. destroyed rap communities, but that’s just wrong. They’re looking for a villain and instead of tackling larger issues, like a failing and oppressive system designed to help the rich get richer and make it difficult for the poor to climb the social ladder, they attack a well known group because it’s easier to make memes.
If you have time to see a movie this weekend, see Straight Outta Compton. You will not regret it.
